OVERVIEW

Public Art Project: To celebrate its 20th Anniversary, LA’s BEST selected Jillian Kogan (Dunn) to art direct and co-create a 260-ft mural painted by street artist Marcus Suarez on the construction wall of the new LAPD Metro Detention Center site in the Downtown Civic Center. The “Do Time at LA’s Best” theme was a site-specific message of prevention and not detention.  The project was supported by Jean-Marc Durviaux CEO / Creative Director and the team at DISTINC, Koontz Hardware, Ali Cherkis, Carla Sanger and the team at LA's BEST, along with the incredible Marcus Suarez and his creative crew.

Initiative: To bring awareness to the crucial after school hours when many students are left unsupervised and rates of juvenile crime increase. Children who “spend time” at LA’s BEST are more likely to make positive choices.

Campaign: LA’s Best launched a press conference on July 10, 2008 to unveil the mural to the public. The Honorable Mayor Villaraigosa, Chief Bratton and Councilwoman Wendy Greuel joined LA’s BEST CEO Carla Sanger and LA’s BEST students from Leo Politi Elementary School in completing the mural with city leaders, supporters, and the media.

“This mural represents the positive choices that lead to a brighter future for the city’s children and sends a message that prevention, not detention is the ultimate goal.” said LA’s BEST President & CEO Carla Sanger.
