OVERVIEW

The CALIFORNIA ARTS COUNCIL (CAC)  recruited Jillian Kogan (Dunn) to design its 2008-09 public-service campaign. Working with the CAC team,  she constructed a 15x20 foot assemblage titled ‘CALIFORNIA IMAGINATION’ at the Armory for the Arts Annex in Pasadena, California and produced the 15-second PSA.

The flag assemblage featured 300 unique items collected from artists and arts organizations throughout the state. Each object loaned for the "California Imagination" project told a story about California arts -- a camera used to teach inner city youth, mariachi regalia, the iconic symbols of California's creative industries, and hundreds more. The completed work was photographed and the images produced into a 15-second PSA featuring the song “Pipeline” by The Ventures.

“The project is a great way to show off the creativity of California and the arts in our state,” said Muriel Johnson, Director of the Council.

Campaign:  On May 15, 2008, the PSA was released on the CAC website and on YouTube. It was featured on California Channel stations, opened the San Francisco Film Festival, and played on the Giants Stadium jumbotron. CAC unfurled an actual flag based on the artwork on the West Steps of the state capitol in honor of Flag Day and the state stamp.

CAC produced and distributed 100K magnets, postcards, and posters statewide to support California Arts Day. The real flag was also shared with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger at the CAC Legislative Reception in the Governor's Council Room in January 2009 and again at hearings.
